January Report

Welcome back to school! During the first week of January, 6 Carleton students attended CFES Congress 2010 at McMaster University in Hamilton. At Congress, elections happened for both the new executive and commissioners. During this time, our very own President, Robert Stalker, became President of the CFES and Kevin Atkins became the National Capital Liaison! You might want to talk to them about what their new position entails and their goals for the year. Check out www.cfes.ca for a list of the rest of the new exec.
The Ontario Engineering Competition is happening in two weeks and all of the registration has been completed. We have a junior, senior, consulting, innovation and parliamentary debate team representing Carleton.
In other news, ESSCO is putting together a Rube Goldberg machine. This will go through schools all across Ontario and end at the Science Center in Toronto. For Ontario, it will kick off national engineering month. There will be more information available this week and next week.
The CFES has created a charity cookbook containing recipes from engineering students all across Canada. Charity cookbooks will be on sale in Leo’s this week for 10$. All of the money goes to support the Canadian Red Cross. There are only 30 of them so get them quick.
Next month I will have reports from FYIC and ESSCO exec. Get excited!

November Report

Hey all,

This month has been busy in the external portfolio and a lot has been getting done. The month began with a presentation from the ESSCO President, Spencer McEwan. Carleton students in attendance learned about both the society and its initiatives. ESSCO is the engineering students' society council of Ontario. They connect all the schools across the province, liaise directly with the PEO and promote initiatives that encourage high school involvement with engineering.
On November 4th, both the PEO and OSPE came to campus to give a brief session about licensing and governing of the engineering profession. A representative from the Ottawa PEO chapeter, Sucha S.Mann, P.Eng. PMP, gave us his life story and insight into the engineering profession. Lee Weissling, OSPE Manager of Business Development spoke directly to their student membership program and ways for students to benefit from their services. Manoj Choudhary, P.Eng. Student Liaison Coordinator was the last to speak to us and he talked about all of the requirements to getting your P.Eng. All parties involved came out of this session in a positive manor.
This past weekend delegates from Carleton were sent to both NCWIE and PEO-SC.
The National Conference on Women in Engineering was attended by students in their second, third or fourth year of study here at Carleton.
The Professional Engineers of Ontario Student Conference was attended by myself and three other delegates. It was here that we learned all about equity in the engineering profession.
Also, this past weekend was the LAN and Magic tournament here at Carleton. As mandated, I must hold at least two of these per year and so this is starting to fulfill that. We had excellent turnout for the magic tournament which created an intense competition. As for the LAN side of things, we had very little interest. I'm going to definitely look into changing that for the next time that we host this.
Charity cookbooks have arrived from the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students. You will be able to purchase them in LEOS starting very soon. They are 10$ each and the money goes towards Canadian Red Cross.

Look forward to specific conference reports from your External in the next couple of weeks.

Memoirs Of A Fall GM & Friends

Oi,

I know this is a bit past date and a long time in coming, so apologies about the delays in updating the blog. A lot has happened since my last post, so let's just get right into it:

ESSCO PM
Held all the way back in September by the lovely University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). Attended by myself and the President, Andrew Harte, as well as similar representatives from most of the other Ontario Engineering Societies. We were brought up to date on the various goings on of ESSCO, such as updates on swag, investigation into investments, relations with the Council Of Deans of Engineering as well as the selection of directors and a new VP Services. New direction was given in the area of investments (largely thanks to our delegation) and our new VP Services, Stephan Lake of Waterloo was very well received all round. Just a note of this gentleman's qualifications, he was named one of Canada's Top 20 Under 20 in 2007, and is currently organizing this year's Ontario Engineering Competition, so he's no slouch in the achievements and experience catagories. Planning for PEOSC was brought forward and seemed to be coming along nicely. All in all UOIT pulled off a pretty solid PM for their first conference.

CFES PM
Hosted by friends from Sherbrooke, CFES PM was held in early October, drawing in the VP Externals or Presidents from Engineering Societies from all around Canada. Similar to the ESSCO PM, the conference was designed for everyone to get updates and give feedback on the CFES. ProMag presented ideas for a new, more journalistic direction with the magazine, Congress provided updates on sessions and funding, and the Social Issues Commissioners report was discussed. Several items were taken away from this meeting, one namely being Movember from the charity round table. The CFES seems to be running smoothly even through issues such as resignations, and I am looking forward to Congress to hear their final reports.

Fall GM
Pasted below is my report from FGM:
Facilitate communication and liaise with engineering societies and organizations external to Carleton University:
-Met so far, have not missed an ESSCO teleconference, or conference.
-Facilitated specific communications from outside organizations and parties to the appropriate person within CSS (i.e. social, academic) and vice versa)
Correspond with professional organizations:
-Have not fulfilled, I have passed along this year's executive information and structure to PEO, but I have not fully pursued contact with local PEO chapter (sent one e-mail, did not receive reply, need to follow-up)
-Have not conversed with OSPE yet (Update: I have, tentative visit in late Jan, early Feb)
Recruit and ensure adequate representation at sanctioned engineering conferences:
-Fulfilled so far, full attendance at ESSCO PM, CFES PM, ESSCO AGM (one member short of traditional attendance, adequate reason though) (Update: PEOSC now included)
-Information about NCWIE should have gone out this week, applications accepted online
-Carleton has made its presence known at all conferences attended
-Volunteered to be a member of ESSCO Financial Review Committee
-If you want specific information on what was accomplished/happened at each conference, please speak to me during the break
Coordinate community and charity events:
-Have not fulfilled
-Found a charity Director: Jordan Briggs, 2nd Year Aerospace
-Looking to organize a LAN before end of October (Update: Did not occur)
-Looking into new Charity ideas that other schools are doing (Update: See Movember)
Other:
-I will be helping transition the First Year Rep into their position with advice like organize early, and maybe pull off two events

Movember
Movember is a new charity event that we are participating in this year aimed at promoting men's health through awareness and raising funds for the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada. Basically you start off Nov. 1st with a clean shaven face and then grow a moustache for the entire month while collecting donations for prostate cancer. While this may seem targeted just at the gentlemen, ladies can get involved by donating, recruiting more "mo-bros" (as they're called) or growing their own "leg-moustaches" to be deemed a "mo-sista". This is the first year that C-Eng has participated in Movember, and I'd really like it to set a precedent for future years. As of Nov. 11th, the C-Eng team has 15 members and total money raised is just under $2,100. This is very impressive and ranks the C-Eng team at #50 in Canada! As a side note, the majority of this is due to one member, Colin Viegas, who has individually raised $1,945, and I hope the rest of the team steps up like Colin does in the coming weeks!

PEOSC
The PEO Student's Conference happened this past weekend in Windsor, ON, with myself and three other delegates representing Carleton soundly. The major items discussed at this conference were the new PEO initiative of the Government Liaison Program (whose aim is to put 11 engineers in public office by 2011, and 27 in office by 2027) and leadership and communication at the university and post-university level. Delegates conversed with Howard Brown, the PEO Government Liaison as well as gave feedback as to how the PEO could increase it's student membership program's enrollment and services.

My First Post!

Hola C-Eng,

I guess this is a little late in the making, but let me introduce myself. I am Rob Stalker, the new Minister of Foreign Affairs for the 2008-09 year. My overall job is to represent and facilitate communication between CSES and outside organizations such as the Engineering Student Societies Council of Ontario (ESSCO) and the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students (CFES) as well as the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) just to name a few.

One aspect of this is sending delegates to conferences that these various groups hold. There is a huge variety of these throughout the year, with themes ranging from technical and post-university life to how to get involved in your local engineering society (CSES). Information on these conferences will be sent out via the announce e-mails as well as through posters scattered through the MacKenzie Building. Stay tuned in the coming year for these exciting opportunities.

Another part of my job involves inviting some of these outside organizations to come in and give workshops on themselves and other useful topics. Examples include last year's resume workshop by the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE), which we'll be looking into doing again. Information on these session will also be going out via the announce e-mails and posters.

Onto some more current news, CSES attended ESSCO's Annual General Meeting (AGM) in June with great success this year. The delegates included myself, Andrew Harte our Prime Minister, Suzanne Swaine the outgoing VP External and Laura Mutu one of our Councillors. The workshop sessions provided us with valuable insight on what ESSCO did this year, as well as some practical experiences from other societies that will of no doubt be of help in the coming year. During the plenary Carleton also successfully put forth three motions, one concerning investing ESSCO's money, another on creating ESSCO swag and the final one on the construction of a "wishlist" tool on the website for people to submit suggestions and ideas. I'm happy to say the wishlist tool is already in place, so great going new ESSCO Exec! Speaking of the new ESSCO Exxecutive, our very own Suzanne Swaine was voted in VP Development, a brand new position, for the 2008-2009 year. Congratulations Suzanne and we know you'll do Carleton proud.

That is about all on the Foreign Affairs front for now, but look for updates closer to and during September as a lot of news about conferences and sessions regarding PEO and OSPE will be coming out. Happy Summers C-Eng.

Fondest Regards,

Rob Stalker
